Shift Work Labour Newsletter Selected as Finalist for Award

PressProgress has been shortlisted for "Best Blog Column/Videocast/Podcast" at the 2023 COPA awards

PressProgress’ weekly labour newsletter, Shift Work, has been shortlisted for a journalism award by the Canadian Online Publishing Awards (COPA).

The work of Senior Reporter, Emily Leedham, has been nominated for ‘Best Blog Column/Videocast/Podcast’ in the Business category, for her weekly publication that curates Canadian labour news while tracking all active strikes and lockouts.

The newsletter launched in 2021 after identifying a major gap in mainstream coverage on issues featuring working people and the labour movement in Canada. Shift Work looks to engage the next generation of workers and organizers, highlighting the intersections of labour with broader issues like income inequality, housing, climate change, structural racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and more.

The name Shift Work reflects the reality of work for many Canadians. Whether working multiple shifts for multiple employers, or long hours around the clock, the lives of everyday people revolve around these shifts. The name also represents an important tenant of PressProgress’ editorial mission: By exposing injustice and unfair workplace practices, our stories create real-world impact by holding wealthy and powerful entities accountable, and shifting the imbalanced level of power to working Canadians.

The unique role of Shift Work is also recognized by the community. As the only publication that tracks every ongoing strike and lockout across the country, top labour academics have invited Senior Reporter Emily Leedham to collaborate on a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council grant submission to study strikes in Canada. Shift Work is also featured as a resource on the home page of the University of Winnipeg’s Labour Studies department.

Labour leaders, economists, academics, and politicians are also subscribed to Shift Workand provide consistent feedback that it’s a valuable weekly resource that helps provide a well-rounded perspective for their professional work.
