University students have to work as much as six times the number of hours in minimum-wage jobs to pay their tuition bill compared to 40 years ago, a new study has found.
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives looked at Statistics Canada’s tuition data between 1975 and 2013, and found that the huge jump in fees over the years (an increase, on average, of 948%, from $551 to $5772) means students have to work a lot more hours just to cover the cost of tuition.
It’s most dramatic for professional programs because many provinces, cutting back funding for post-secondary education, have allowed universities to chargedifferential tuition fees for medical, law and dentistry programs.
