PressProgress’ Sources Wins Canadian Podcast Award for ‘Outstanding News and Current Affairs Series’

PressProgress wins top prize at 2024 Canadian Podcast Awards

The top prize at the 2024 Canadian Podcast Awards has gone to PressProgress.

Sources, an explanatory journalism podcast by PressProgress that digs deeper into the issues behind the headlines in the daily news cycle, was awarded “Outstanding News and Current Affairs Series” at the seventh annual Canadian Podcast Awards.

Each episode of Sources is hosted by a different member of PressProgressaward-winning team of journalists and features in-depth interviews with subject matter experts and top newsmakers breaking down and unpacking issues for listeners.

Stephen Magusiak, who coordinates the Sources podcast, says he’s “over the moon” after winning the award.

“It was humbling to be up against so many great Canadian podcasts,” Magusiak says. “This podcast lets you hear from the voices of our sources directly and builds on our reporting by adding an extra level to the stories we tell at PressProgress.”

Past winners in the same category include CBC Radio’s Frontburner daily news podcast and Jordan Heath-Rawlings’ The Big Story podcast on Frequency.

Eric Wickham, PressProgress’ Ontario Reporter who also edits audio for the podcast, says it was “very nice to win an award in a medium I care deeply about.”

“Sources is great because it adds a new layer of depth to the stories we tell,” Wickham says. “Every time a journalist interviews someone interesting, there are always great quotes that don’t make it into the final story – Sources gives people the chance to hear directly from experts and get an even better understanding of the stories we write about.”

PressProgress Associate Editor Rumneek Johal points to her Sources podcast episode on Canada’s high rate of international student deaths as an example of how the podcast builds on her reporting.

“This podcast allowed me and my source to delve deeper into the nuances of international student exploitation and expand on my reporting,” Johal explains. “It resonated deeply with audiences to hear about how the non-profit sector is stepping in to fill a gap for this newcomer community that is often left vulnerable and alone.”

The Canadian Podcast Awards bills itself as a “celebration of podcasting excellence” and was established in 2018 by Podcamp Toronto to showcase the very best in Canadian on-demand digital and audio production. Over 2,300 votes were cast to select this year’s winners.
