Hey Big Oil: you aren’t the only one making pipeline maps for schools

Safety incidents involving pipelines in Canada have more than doubled over the past decade, and they’ve affected communities right across the country.

But you won’t find this inconvenient stat – or a map of 2013 pipeline spills in North America – in the “Energy IQ” teaching materials funded by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers. The materials, including a giant floor-sized map to map out pipeline routes, are currently being distributed to schools across the country by Canadian Geographic magazine.

In the words of a group of high-school students in Vancouver, the stuff is “propaganda.” The open letter from the students, drafted to keep the CAPP-funded materials out of their school, starts off with this opener: “We’re young, not stupid. Keep big oil out of our schools.”
